The history of showgirls dates back to the late 1800s in Parisian music halls and cabarets such as the Moulin Rouge, the Lido and the Folies Bergere. The original showgirls were Can Can dancers back then. Presented in Las Vegas in 1952, showgirls were used as the opening and closing acts for Las Vegas headliners, sometimes even dancing around the headliner. They were introduced at the Sands Casino for a show with Danny Thomas in 1957. Minskyís Follies performed at the Desert Inn Casino, where the topless showgirl 1st premiered in Las Vegas. This was followed by the long-running show at the Stardust Casino The Lido de Paris that ran for 31 years! By the 60's & 70ís the showgirl was a Las Vegas staple, with each casino outdoing itself with bigger and better costumes.
Notable gals who performed as showgirls include Marilyn Monroe, Jayne Mansfield, Rita Moreno, Valerie Perrine, Vanessa Williams, Beyonce Knowles, Kylie Minogue, Pamela Anderson, Holly Madison, the list goes on and on. Famous showgirl troupes include the Gold Diggers from the Dean Martin Show in the 1970ís and of course the Rockettes from New York
